Outpatient’s Clinic:      Located in the main Outpatient Department in the Yellow Zone.  Access is from Hospital Road.  If you would like to check where your appointment will be held, please call the secretary.

Description of service provided:

The team provides a service to Whipps Cross University Hospital, which provides a link between the general hospital and psychiatric services. It enables a prompt, efficient assessment to people who self-harm or have an identifiable mental illness to have access to psychiatric intervention and treatment. The team responds to emergency situations within the hospital where an individual may present with acute mental illness or crisis. It also provides out-patient follow-up to monitor mental state and review treatment. Psychological short-term evidence based interventions are also provided.

What we do:

We provide a link between the general hospital and psychiatric services and a comprehensive assessment and treatment service to hospital patients aged 18 to 64 years.

How to get treatment:

To get an appointment with the Psychiatric Liaison team you need to be referred by a hospital consultant, senior nurse or senior therapist.

We see patients aged 18 to 64 years.     Patients aged 65 and over should be referred to the Woodbury Unit next to the hospital site in James Lane.

We do not accept referrals from GPs (General Practitioners).

Hospital inpatients are offered the next available appointment with either a mental health liaison nurse or a psychiatrist specialising in the care of patients with physical illness.

Outpatient referrals are offered the next available appointment with whichever member of the team seems most appropriate based on the information provided in the referral.

Further Information:

We work collaboratively with other health care professionals and services in responding to the needs of patients and promoting awareness of mental health in line with National Service Frameworks.

In addition to psychiatric assessment, we also provide a consultation service to medical and surgical specialities and develop links between Whipps Cross University Hospital and mental health services.
