We will listen

You can talk to us about anything that is on your mind, no matter how bit or small it may seem to you

 We will take what you say seriously

We are professionally trained.

What you say will be treated with respect

We will be culturally sensitive.

 We will respect you right to privacy

You can discuss the things that are personal to you in the knowledge that it will be kept confidential.

(If you or someone else is at risk of serious harm we would discuss with you who to contact to make sure your get the right help – we always strive to do this with your agreement and knowledge).

We will not judge

You can talk through your problems and come to your own decisions as what is best for you

Ethnic Minority therapists

If you would prefer to talk to a Black or Asian Therapist, or someone who speaks you language, please mention this when you contact TLZ.  Also – if you have a preference for a female or male therapist please let us know.

Description of service provided

TLZ (The Listening Zone) young people’s counselling service is based in the East Street young people’s information shop at 20 East Street, Barking IG11 8EU . We provide individual counselling to young people aged 14-21 who live or study in Barking and Dagenham.

Young people can self refer by ‘phone, letter or by dropping into the service. We also take referrals from the full range of professionals, but always ask the young person to confirm they want to be seen. Young people can request a preference to see a female/male/black counsellor.

TLZ are also able to arrange interpreting when needed. 

We also provide a "drop-in" on Thursdays 4-5pm where a young person can speak to a counsellor without having made a prior appointment.

About the drop in, it is usually Thursday but please call anytime to check the day of the drop in (24 hour answer machine message available out of office hours).

We will respond quickly to self referrals or referrals. Short term (1-4 sessions) or longer term counselling (1-12 months and occasionally longer) will then be offered according to need.

We do provide a counselling service to primary and secondary schools in the borough of Barking & Dagenham.
