Following his support for the nomination of Brookside for a Parliamentary Award, we invited Mike Gapes MP for a visit last Thursday (9 August)
The tour of Brookside, our adolescent inpatient mental health unit, was led by Rebekah Bewsey, modern matron and David Hartie, care pathway lead where they shared updates on the service, whilst answering Mike's questions on the referral process, the way access to social media is managed on the unit and many more. Mike also had the opportunity to spend some time with young people that are currently in the care of Brookside and enjoyed some lunch.
“It was a pleasure to facilitate Mike today. We are immensely proud of the work that has happened here and the improvement we have seen in the service we provide."
At the end of the visit, Mike said:
"I enjoyed my visit to Brookside today and am very pleased to see the progress that has been made since the re-opening of the unit."
Brookside is an adolescent mental health inpatient unit for 12-18-year-olds. Over the last 3 years, it has undergone an extensive environmental refurbishment and modernisation of the service offer. The Mayor congratulated the team on this transformation and the subsequent CQC rating ‘Outstanding’. Brookside was subsequently awarded the 2018 RCN Mental Health Practice Award and has recently been accredited by the Quality Network for Inpatient CAMHS (QNIC). Brookside is leading nationally in its model of inpatient care and is sharing good practice with other organisations.
