Following the Council of Governor’s meeting on 24 January 2019 we can confirm the following updates and appointments in relation to our Non-Executive Directors (NEDs).
- Joe Fielder’s term of office as chair of the Trust has been extended by a further three years.
- Mark Friend’s term of office as Senior Independent Director (SID) on the Trust Board has been extended by three years.
- Sultan Taylor has been appointed as vice chair of the Trust Board.
As you will know NEDs are members of the Trust’s board of directors. They are appointees rather than employees. Their role is to contribute (collectively with the executive directors) to the strategic direction, leadership and governance of NELFT, and to provide challenge to the executive directors and to bring an independent perspective to the boardroom. NEDs do not work at the trust full-time – they usually spend three to four days per month on the Trust’s business.
The Council of Governor’s play an important role in ratifying the terms of office and appointments and we are pleased that Joe and Mark will continue in their current roles for a further three years. We are also pleased that Sultan has been appointed vice chair following the departure of John Roome, the previous vice chair.
We are currently out to advert for the vacant NED position following John’s departure and we are exploring opportunities to make a joint NED appointment with our partners at BHRUT to support collaborative working across the health economy. This approach is supported by NHS Improvement.
