Statement - Brookside Adolescent Unit

Over the past year, the Brookside team have been working tirelessly on making improvements to the environment and to enhance the patient experience. Whilst we have seen significant improvements, we have residual concerns and these were supported by our recent CQC inspection.

We have therefore taken the decision to temporarily close Brookside and provide an alternative offer to young people and their families. The plan is to re-open the unit as soon as further improvements have been made.

We have developed a detailed clinical support plan to enable us to manage the safe transitional arrangements of our young people with the support of their families and carers. This will enable us to provide care for them in their home environment. Those young people who require ongoing inpatient support will be offered this at another unit.

The concerns we had around the unit related to staffing capacity and work needed to modernise and improve the safety of the environment. The temporary arrangements will allow these issues to be addressed over a planned period and the unit will re-open when we are satisfied that all concerns have been addressed.
