This is an unusual service working within both the social and medical models. We assess children and adults of all ages with long term and complex needs and liaise with many other services. Our team consists of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, technical instructors and rehabilitation engineering staff, supported by administrators. The wheelchair service works within agreed criteria.
Following assessment, equipment may be provided including:
- manual wheelchairs
- specialist children’s buggies
- powered wheelchairs for indoor and indoor/outdoor independent use
- wheelchair accessories
- wheelchair cushions
- supportive seating systems for wheelchairs
Our wheelchair service is available to patients registered with GPs in Basildon, Billericay, Wickford and Thurrock.
The provision of powered wheelchairs would not be considered for patients who are able to walk or self propel a manual wheelchair indoors. Please note: the provision of powered wheelchairs for outdoor use, and the provision of electric scooters are
both outside the remit of the wheelchair service
Personal Wheelchair Budgets now available
As part of national NHS plans for the wider expansion of personal health budgets, NHS Thurrock / Mid Essex and Basildon and Brentwood CCGs have developed a local personal wheelchair budget (PWB) agreement to replace the current wheelchair voucher system. The personal wheelchair budget is a resource available to increase people’s choice and control of wheelchair provision, either within NHS commissioned services or outside of NHS commissioned services. Patients will be able to use this when their wheelchair is due to be changed, either every 5 years or less if their medical need has changed. People’s medical needs are assessed first, then discussions about lifestyle and use of the wheelchair are then recorded to ensure the wheelchair meets not only clinical need but lifestyle is also taken into consideration.
The process for referral to the Wheelchair Services remains the same, as does the eligibility criteria for referral.
Basildon and Brentwood, Thurrock and Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Groups have worked together with wheelchair providers, NELFT and Provide and patient groups, to agree a new patient leaflet that explains the PWBs. You can download the leaflet in either colour or black and white format for ease of printing.
