The spinal and musculoskeletal assessment service (SMAS) provides assessment and management of patients with non-urgent orthopaedic, musculoskeletal or rheumatology conditions.

The service manages patients with non-urgent conditions, including non-specific low back pain and joint/soft tissue complaints, that may require corticosteroid injections and/or further investigation and diagnostic tests.

The team is made up of specialist extended scope practitioner physiotherapists. Orthopaedic consultant outreach clinics are also provided within the service. The service has regular spinal MDTs with consultants from neurosurgery and pain management.
