Overview

What is the study about?

We are talking to people from South Asian families. These are families from countries like India, Pakistan or Bangladesh. We want to hear their stories about dementia and care.

What is the study trying to find out?

Dementia is when a person’s memory gets weaker. This can make it hard for them to remember things. They might also struggle with daily tasks. We want to hear stories from people in South Asian families who have dementia and also their loved ones. We want to learn how their culture helps. We also want to learn what is not helpful.

What does taking part involve?
  • A meeting with the team to hear more about the study
  • Choosing if you want to take part
  • You can choose to let us visit you a few times and see what your day is like, or talk to us in person, on the phone, or on a computer for about an hour.
  • You can tell us about your life stories, how dementia affects you and how you get help.
  • People who care for you can tell us how they plan care with doctors and nurses to help you.
  • Receive a £50 voucher
Who is it for?

If you are aged 60 years old and above and

  • You have a diagnosis of dementia
  • You identify as South Asian
  • You are a current or former carer for a South Asian relative or friend with dementia

Then we would like to hear from you.

We hope to spend time with 8 people who have dementia. We will also talk with 15 to 20 people who have dementia and can talk with us. We will also talk to 15 to 20 people who take care of people with dementia.

 Why is it important?

We want to find better ways to take care of people with dementia. This means making their homes and places where they live more pleasant and special for their culture. If someone likes certain foods or music from their country, we want to include these in their care. We also want to make better plans to help people with dementia when they go out, in their neighbourhood. This way, they can feel safe and happy.
