Overview

Many people worry that others are trying to harm them in some way. The world can feel unsafe. We have created an online programme called Feeling Safer. It will last six months. The programme is designed to help people feel safer, happier and get back to their usual schedule.

Summary

What is the study about?

The Feeling Safe Programme

Feeling Safer is for people attending mental health services who are 16 years old or older. They are feeling very worried or concerned that others are trying to harm them. It has been created with people who have experienced these feelings.

What is the study trying to find out?

We are trying to see whether using the Feeling Safer programme may be helpful for people. To do this, three out of four people who choose to take part will use the Feeling Safer programme. The other people taking part will carry on with their usual care. The people who use the Feeling Safer programme is decided by chance, like flipping a coin. The study wants to find out if the people who use the programme find it helpful.

What does taking part involve?

  • We will first see if you are having thoughts that make you feel like others are trying to harm you. We will ask you a few simple questions to check if you can be a part of the study
  • Then, we will meet with you to discuss the study in more detail. We will read the Participant Information Sheet and you can ask questions.
  • If you choose to take part, you will meet with a research assistant to complete the consent and first set of questions.
  • Then you will find out if you will be using the Feeling Safer programme or not.  This is decided by chance, like flipping a coin.
  • Everyone who takes part will meet with a research assistant 4 times.  This will be at the beginning, after 3 months, after six months and after 9 months.  This is to see how people get on.
  • Everyone who takes part will receive £15 every time they meet with the research assistant.
  • Feeling Safer will be on a computer, tablet or smart phone. You can log onto the programme, 2-3 times a week for 20 minutes to do some tasks.  The tasks might be about feeling confident, worrying less, sleeping better or being more active.
  • There are frequent check-ins with a staff member and face-to-face meetings.

Who is it for?

If you are aged 16 years old and above and

  • You have a feeling someone is trying to harm you
  • AND you are supported by a mental health service

Then we would like to hear from you.

We hope that 484 people will take part.

Why is it important?

We hope that using the Feeling Safer Programme will help people:

  • feel safer
  • feel happier
  • be more active

The study team hopes to find out whether this is the case, so more people can feel this way
