A-Level Summer School

One to two weeks of:

  • Work experience observing different clinicians working with patients in mental health services
  • Talks on medical careers
  • Mock interviews for Medical school 

A-Level Students -Year 12 or above

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the start of their placement

2nd Year Medical Students MHSoc Placements

Six sessions of teaching, covering themes including:

  • The impact of social factors and issues relating to equality and diversity on health and access to services
  • The role of a psychiatrist
  • The impact of chronic illness on patients
  • The impact of the climate and ecological crisis on mental health
  • The application of ethics in mental health

2nd Year Medical Students

Guest speakers are invited to support

4th Year Medical Students Clinical Placements

5 weeks of clinical placement in psychiatry with the following structure:

  • Two placements, one in inpatient psychiatry and one in the community
  • These are primarily general adult and older adult placements
  • Students can also request taster days in other areas of psychiatry

4th Year Medical Students Clinical Skills Sessions

Small group teaching & role-play to develop basic clinical skills relating to the following topics:

  • Depressive disorders
  • Communication skills
  • Mania/Hypomania
  • Psychosis

4th Year Medical Students

GPs, CTs, STs, SAS & Consultants Volunteers are needed

4th Year Medical Students Placement Activities Practice

Simulation scenarios focused on common psychiatric presentations:

  • Risk assessment of suicide
  • Mental state examination in psychosis
  • Cognitive assessment
  • Substance misuse history

Lecture-based teaching week on psychiatry for Physician Associates

Simulation scenarios of MHA tribunals focussed on:

  • Performing an assessment of a patient’s mental state then constructing an argument to justify ongoing detention and presenting it
  • Responding to cross-examination
  • Reflecting on how the tribunal process impacts the clinician-patient relationship
