Lesley Finlayson’s commitment to community service began early back in 1990, when she was elected as a local councillor, a role she dedicated herself to for 16 years.
Now she is an involvement representative for NELFT, using her lived experience to help shape better mental health services.
After her retirement in 2015, Lesley continued her passion for helping others by volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic, training to become a vaccinator. It was during this time that she met a friend who would later require her care.
For three years, Lesley devoted herself to caring for this close friend, who was battling mental illness. Her support extended beyond the usual, from redecorating her friend’s flat to accompanying her to medical appointments and assisting with everyday tasks. Lesley became a constant presence throughout her friend’s challenging journey.
However, the demands of caring for someone began to weigh on her mental health. Without sufficient support or guidance, the emotional and physical exhaustion mounted. This turning point inspired Lesley to use her experience to help others.
Lesley said:
“I wish I could go back 40 years and have a career in mental health. I’ve learned so much from my experience as an involvement representative at NELFT, and now I want to use that knowledge to help others. There needs to be more understanding about what patients and carers actually need. Services must listen to both parties and ensure that the right support is in place at the right time.”
Lesley now dedicates her time to support others and part of the project group to helping to shape the NELFT carers strategy. Find out more here: Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) | NELFT NHS Foundation Trust
