Tuesday 8 July marks International Paramedics Day, a day to recognise and celebrate the vital work of paramedics and first responders across the world. This year’s theme is Unity and Community.
Gary Barrett, one of our paramedics at Waltham Forest Rapid Response team spoke about his experiences at work:
“I felt really welcomed joining NELFT and the people I work with are really happy that we have this skill mix now. We can bring our own knowledge and training into work and pass these skill sets on, in addition to learning new skills from the other disciplinaries we work alongside.”
The Rapid Response service, part of the Waltham Forest adult community health service, provides 24/7 urgent community response for patients, 18 years and over who are house bound, and experiencing a physical health crisis requiring an intervention otherwise be admitted to hospital. The team comprises of nurses, paramedics, social worker, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists.
Gary added:
“I love the fact that my skills and knowledge that I have gained in my career are helping to keep people safe and treated at home. Avoiding hospital is a passion for me and my current role allows me to make those decisions with the person and their family.
“The autonomy and support my colleagues give me each day, along with all the training I receive to help me keep people safe makes it a really great place to work and adds to the enjoyment of what I do daily.”
