The Medway Emotional Support Team recently took the opportunity to use their wellbeing time to strengthen their understanding of the Sikh culture within the community they support. The team visited Medway Towns Gurdwara Sabha (MTGS) to learn more about the Sikh faith which is practiced by many of the families in the schools they support.
During their hour-long visit, the team was welcomed by members of the Gurdwara who shared insights into the principles of Sikhism and the role it plays within the community.
Sikhism stands by core values such as equality, selflessness and being community-focused. The Gurdwara is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds. One of the core practices within Gurdwaras is the offering of free meals, known as langar, which is available to all visitors.
The opportunity allowed the Medway team to better understand the cultural and spiritual foundations of the Sikh families they support, strengthening their knowledge to encourage a more inclusive and supportive environment within their schools.
Taking the time to connect with the Sikh community also enabled staff to gain a different perspective on the diversity within the area they support.
A Mental Health Practitioner from the team said:
“What a wonderful, spiritual and friendly place. I have learned so much about the best qualities of the faith, living as equals and the importance of giving back, it was very humbling and educational.”
Through initiatives like these, the Medway Emotional Support Team continues to strengthen their commitment to inclusivity, reflecting the values of the communities they serve.
