First Multi-Professional Approved Clinician appointed at NELFT

NELFT is proud to announce the appointment of its first Multi-Professional Approved Clinician, Penny Fernandez, marking a major milestone in advancing multidisciplinary clinical leadership across mental health services.

Approved clinicians are senior professionals, including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychologists, who are authorised by national panels to act under the Mental Health Act. They hold legal responsibility for key decisions relating to care and treatment for patients detained under the Act, including leave arrangements, discharge planning, and the coordination of care.

Throughout her training and accreditation process, Penny was supported by colleagues across NELFT, from service managers and ward teams to clinical leaders, who helped ensure she had protected time for study and access to supervision. Penny has been officially approved by the London panel and returns to Turner Ward in the role of Consultant Nurse Approved Clinician.

Penny said:

“For NELFT, this is a significant step forward. It signals a shift toward a more multidisciplinary approach in inpatient care, one that complements the traditional medical model with holistic, patient-centred care. It opens the door for other nursing colleagues to follow a similar clinical pathway and diversify the voices leading inpatient treatment.”

“If you're a nurse who wants to remain in a clinical role rather than move into management, this could be the perfect path for you. The role allows you to lead, influence, and deliver patient care at a senior level - all while staying true to your clinical roots.”
