The Learning Disabilities and Autism Intensive Support Team at North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) has been shortlisted for an HSJ Patient Safety Award in the category Learning Disabilities Initiative of the Year. The nomination recognises a pioneering digital project: Implementing an Electronic Prescription Service and a Medicines Optimisation Service for a Learning Disability and Autism Virtual Ward.
The team secured approval to implement CLEO Electronic Prescription Service, which went live in January 2024. By digitalising the prescribing process, the initiative has helped reduce errors, minimise paper use and reduced the pressure placed on carers, creating a more accessible and sustainable system that brings care closer to home.
Dr Darren Savarimuthu, Associate Director of Nursing & Quality for Learning Disabilities and Autism at NELFT, said:
“Being shortlisted for the HSJ Patient Safety Award is a huge achievement for the team and the organisation. This recognition reflects the incredible collaboration between our team, pharmacy colleagues, and wider stakeholders, all committed to transforming care for people with learning disabilities. Such innovation has made a real difference, particularly in reducing the risk of medication errors and managing polypharmacy. Our pharmacy colleagues have worked tirelessly to make this happen, and their dedication has been key to the project's success.”
Developed collaboratively with NHS England and System C, the model was co-produced with stakeholders, clinicians, and service users to ensure it addressed the real-world needs of people with learning disabilities and autism. The initiative is already being scaled across other teams, setting the stage for wider system adoption.
Rizwana Dudhia, Lead Pharmacist for Learning Disabilities and Autism at NELFT, said:
“It’s been a privilege to lead this work, knowing it’s making a real difference for people with learning disabilities who too often face avoidable delays and barriers in accessing their medication. This project shows what’s possible when we combine clinical insight with digital innovation and a real focus on equity. It’s not just about prescribing, it’s about giving people the timely, safe, person-centred care they deserve.”
