Mayflower Community Hospital is proud to announce the opening of its new Sunflower Health and Wellbeing Garden, a vibrant outdoor space designed to support the rehabilitation and wellbeing of patients, staff, and visitors.
The garden offers a calming, therapeutic environment that enhances patient recovery and provides a welcoming space for all. The name “Sunflower” was inspired by a beloved tradition among younger service users who have long enjoyed planting sunflowers as part of their therapeutic activities.
A short video featuring service users Muhammad and Orville highlights the garden’s impact and can be viewed below:
The initiative was led by the prosthetics and wheelchair services teams, whose work supports individuals with limb loss, limb difference, and permanent mobility needs. Their vision was brought to life through the dedication of Sarah Slattery, Rehab Assistant, and Laura Moles, Senior Rehabilitation Assistant.
Funding for the garden was secured through the NELFT NHS Charity, with generous contributions from the local community and supporters. Special thanks to Human Kind Cafe, a local social enterprise whose support was instrumental in the garden’s development.
To celebrate the garden’s opening, NELFT hosted a community garden party featuring games provided by the local Rotary Club, free ice creams, a raffle and live music and entertainment. The event brought together service users, staff, and community members in a joyful celebration of the new health and wellbeing garden.
Supporting the NELFT NHS Charity is a meaningful way to contribute to projects like the Sunflower Garden. Volunteers and supporters help make a direct impact on the lives of patients, carers, and staff.
