An event which aims to inspire action, foster understanding, and drive lasting change in how Black males experience mental healthcare, is taking place on Friday 25 October

Driven by a unique collaboration between NELFT, East London Foundation Trust (ELFT) , and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, this event aims to tackle the mental health difficulties faced by Black males, while highlighting the impact of early intervention and prevention in transforming lives and promoting long-term mental wellbeing.

The event, organised as part of the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF), is chaired by NELFT Chief Nurse, Wellington Makala.

Key speakers include:

— Matthew McKenzie, carer activist and author, will be sharing a poem reflecting his experiences as a carer.

— Service users will offer real-life accounts of navigating the mental health system and their perspectives on needed changes.

— Representatives from Talking Therapies will highlight innovative work to improve access, experiences, and outcomes for Black males based on focused engagement sessions held earlier this year.

— Box Up Crime, a youth organisation that addresses the root social issues affecting young people vulnerable to crime, and offering positive alternatives and brighter futures.

— Dr Jacqui Dyer from the national Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) team will provide an update on developments so far.

Interactive workshops will create opportunities for participants to collaborate on solutions for improving mental health services.

Musical performances by Hercules and Danyell, will add a creative element to the day.

The event takes place from 10am-4pm at Holiday Inn Express, Newbury Park, 713 Eastern Avenue, Ilford, London, IG2 7RH.
