Minor injuries unit (MIU), Orsett

Our minor injuries unit provides a comprehensive nurse-led service which deals with a wide range of minor injuries. Wound care can be provided either as part of emergency care or when a review of a wound is required. Although we do try to arrange for reoccurring wound care to be continued by the patient’s own GP and practice nurse service.

We have access to X-ray, Monday to Friday until 4pm, and can request a range of views suitable to our needs. The X-ray requesting facilities available for patients attending the MIU are for the shoulder to the fingers and the knee to the toes only. We do not X-ray children under seven years of age due to the complexity of interpreting their results. We can refer to other community services such as district nurses and practice nurses for continued care as appropriate.

We have access to an extended scope physiotherapist and can refer patients for an initial assessment following an acute injury.

Our qualified staff are all immediate life-trained to use a defibrillator and appropriate airway support equipment.
